Parks and Recreation Internship

The City of Goodlettsville is a community of over 16,000 residents, but serves a much larger population being located adjacent to Nashville and Hendersonville, Tennessee.  The community is very supportive of parks and recreation and expects great things from the department. Quality of life is among the highest rated reasons people choose to live in Goodlettsville. 

Goodlettsville Parks & Recreation currently manages over 200 acres of parkland, 18 athletic fields, a community center, and an outdoor pool and splash pad.  Programs offered by the department include enrichment, social opportunities, athletics, and fitness.  The department manages most of the special events for the City including the Independence Day Celebration, Halloween In the Park, Hometown Holidays, Good Dog Festival and Egg Hunt, Fun Fridays, and Music on Main.  The department also has multiple partnerships to meet the athletic and fitness needs of the community.

Our internship program is designed for undergraduate students currently enrolled in a four-year university studying parks and recreation management, city government operations, leisure studies, or related curriculum

Program Goals

  • Provide an opportunity to combine theory and hands-on experience with his/her professional education.
  • Provide and opportunity to expand his/her philosophy/understanding of the parks and recreation profession.
  • Build an understanding/appreciation for the duties & responsibilities of a professional and the people they serve.

Program Details

A Parks & Recreation program involves so much more than swings and seeds.  Our internship is designed to broaden your knowledge, understanding, and skills in a variety of service areas within the department to ensure you are prepared and exposed to every aspect of the career field and fully prepared to take on future opportunities.

Over the course of the semester, each intern will rotate time in each of the following service areas, with emphasis varied by student interest:

Administration            Park Maintenance            Marketing and Communications            Special Events

Community Center Recreation            Athletic Programming            Aquatics (Summer Only)     

Additionally, each intern will complete a special project approved by Goodlettsville Parks & Recreation, tailored to meet specific course needs and/or interest goals.  Projects could include planning an event, programming kids' activities, or creating a marketing campaign.
