TN native. Likes moist well drained slopes in the wild. It was never a major component in any forest type in TN but was an occasional specimen encountered. Planted very much in the 1900’s and is more abundant now than it was originally. It was planted for its edible nuts and beautiful chocolate color heartwood for furniture and novelty items. The wood has a distinct, strong, and somewhat pleasing smell. Pretty large compound leaves with small elliptical leaflets. Large tree with little Fall color
